The Citizen — Design Trends

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

The Citizen models like the one above had an ultra-stealthy look — just the single word “CITIZEN” on the dials. Aside from the detailed case polish there was no hint the watches were special. And they had plain casebacks. But these were high-flying birds, with the most accurate quartz movement in regular production beating in […]

Citizen i:Vert — Digital Watch that Syncs with Cell Phones

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Citizen watches don’t get a lot of ink … er … pixals, on GMT+9. Petew’s recent review of a long-sought-after Campanola is a noteable exception. Without objection, I’d like to focus on another unusual Citizen today. The Citizen i:VERT is a digital watch that syncs with Sharp 3G cell phones — a combination remote control, […]

A Very Unusual Citizen Campanola

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Those familiar with the traditionally ornate look of Citizen’s Campanola line would be surprised to see the watch pictured above.  After all, this simple, time only pilot style watch is the antithesis of what collectors expect from a Campanola branded watch.  Just as surprising as the name on the dial is the caliber of the […]

Death in the Afternoon

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Ernest Hemingway wrote, in his bullfighting book Death in the Afternoon, that before he discovered the traditions and art of bullfighting, he found the sport to be “simple, barbarous and cruel.” Rest assured that there will be nothing like that in this lighthearted comparison between two champion bulls.

It was a great year in 2004 for […]

Citizen Crystal Seven and Seven

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

For those needing a little pick-me-up, Citizen has re-issued two versions of their Crystal Seven. Available on Web sites in Japan, both are automatics that handwind. Citizen CTV66-0523 is pictured above, and is based on a watch originally released in 1965. It retails for 14,700 Yen (about $130 US dollars).

Chinese Citizens

Photo: Citizen Watch Co. Ltd.
Citizen sold more watches last year in China than any other manufacturer, but will change its marketing strategy in 2008 to increase revenue, according to a recent report. The Japanese watch manufacturer plans to stop selling low-priced quartz watches in China and focus on high-end mechanical and Eco-Drive models, it says.

Vintage Seiko & Citizen Catalog Browsing

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

What does a GMT+9 writer do in the middle of summer when he’s too busy playing golf and tennis to write a legitimate watch article? Well, he takes the easy way out and just posts some cool catalog shots from days gone by. For these shots, I grabbed a Citizen catalog from 1980 and a […]
