A decade ago the Seiko Fun Walker model SVAH007 would have seemed a technological step forward. It features a pedometer that records steps, distance, time, and calories burned. But time is moving fast. Now the watch seems out of date.

An iPhone or iPod Touch with a Nike+ sensor is a pedometer that records all the data a Seiko Fun Walker does, plus automatically uploads it to your computer, and includes options like geotagging walks or runs for viewing on Google Maps.

Technology is stepping ahead quickly. Sony, Google, and Intel are working on an Internet TV, and so-called “cord cutters” have already canceled their cable TV and watch programs on Hulu, Netflix, iTunes, YouTube, or free TV links.

The Seiko Fun Walker is a good example of how watches have not really *yet* incorporated Bluetooth or Internet technology at a sophisticated level. Not even Casio.

The Fun Walker is a low-cost watch, one of the lowest-priced watches with the Seiko wordmark on it sold in Japan. It retails for only 8,400 yen ($90US) and goes for around 3,000 yen ($32) through online vendors. It’s probably made in China.

The Fun Walker is an anachronism in 2010, something that seems out of place. Ten years ago it would have been cutting edge, but now it’s a symbol of how high technology is out pacing advances in watch technology.
