Seiko SKX007 yesterday just minutes before the end of the time trial

After the stock market crash in the United States in the fall of 2008, the US news media started talking about “the new economy.” That’s a euphemism for live with less, tighten your belt, make due with what you got. In that spirit, today’s post is about my Seiko SKX007J, which I’ve owned for three years.

I recently did two things with my SKX007 that I haven’t done with any watch in a long time. I wore it nonstop for a week straight, and did a “timing test” on the 21-jewel Seiko automatic movement.

Wearing a watch nonstop for a week

Let’s jump into the deep end. Wearing a watch nonstop for a week, we can see a reflection of our own moods. The watch acts as a compass, a still point, a baseline to watch ourselves.

When I looked at my SKX007 at different times of the day, in a different light, I felt differently about it. Sometimes I saw it through eyes of love. Sometimes I gazed at it indifferently. Have you ever had the experience of becoming tired of a watch, putting it away in the watch box, only to rediscover it with affection a few months later? Those feelings can happen several times over the course of a week of nonstop use.

Time check

Here are the results of the time check. I wore the watch nonstop for 7 days, except for taking it off to shower, and from time to time putting it on the desk, for up to a couple hours, taking a break.

1. On Jan. 5 the watch was +24 seconds at 10:12 p.m. when compared to an atomic clock. That was the baseline (+/- 0).

2. Jan 6, +22 seconds @ 10:14 p.m. (-2 seconds)

3. Jan 7, +24 seconds @ 10:09 p.m. (+2 seconds)

4. Jan 8, +31 seconds @ 11:46 p.m. (+7 seconds)

5. Jan 10, +34 seconds @ 12:24 a.m. (+3 seconds)

6. Jan 10, +41 seconds @ 10:15 p.m. (+7 seconds)

7. Jan 11, +48 seconds @ 10:08 p.m. (+7 seconds)

Total time watch gained in one week: +24 seconds

Conclusion

I’m of course delighted with the results of the time trial, and I enjoyed wearing “one watch” for a week straight. I might add a few new watches to my collection this year, but for the most part I plan to adapt to the “new economy” by enjoying what I already have. It’s the “in thing” to do. So don’t be surprised to see another article on Seiko SKX007 here soon.

  1. Overload Says:

Seiko has never imported the 007 into the USA. Instead we have the SKX173 or SKX175. The 173 has a black dial and bezel, but has square hour indexes. The 175 has the same round and oval indexes as the 007, but on a blue dial with pepsi (red & blue) bezel. The 173 comes with the standard (z22?) rubber strap for $425MSRP, while the 175 comes with a stainless band at $450MSRP. The Monsters are slightly more expensive.

    Hi Overload,

That’s true. Seiko SKX007 was also never officially sold in Japan, although some stores there did sell them as “foreign models.” I bought my first SKX007 there at a store called Tic Tac (link). That was in the year 2001, and I believe I paid 18,000 JPY for it.
