Looks like reports from Japan that you’ll need to sink big coin into a new 300m or 1000m Seiko Professional Quartz diver’s watch aren’t all wet.

Yesterday Seiko Japan announced model SBBN00E will come out in April and retail for ¥420,000. Sure this Robert F. Marx limited edition model of 300 units is bound to be more expensive than a standard piece, but these kind of prices give credence to predictions a soon-to-be-released redesigned 300m to sell for over $1,200 US, and a standard version 1000m for over $2,000.

The new limited edition 1000m pictured above has a caseback inscription from Marx that reads “THERE’S A POT OF GOLD WAITING TO BE FOUND AT THE END OF EVERY RAINBOW.”

It might be as aptly read “Takes a Pot of Gold to Buy This Watch.” Or any future Seiko Japan Professional Quartz diver’s watch?

LE can have any price tag it wants. Unless they do something about it, giving it a $2000 price tag in an era of weak dollar, i do not see many people getting it.

Both the 300m and 1000m Pro Quartz were two of the best watch values around for almost a decade. This pair was always “under valued” considering the build quality and technologies they sported. Very similar to the position the Seiko Spirit automatic & Mechanical lines hold today.

One interesting thing about these divers getting “kicked upstairs” price-wise is the cat is out of the bag thanks to Katsu-san and Seiya-san, and there is a short-time window open when people can still buy them as “New Old Stock.” This wasn’t the case in the past, for instance when caliber 4S15 models stopped production back in the late ’90s.

By the way, does SEIKO know that Robert Marx in NOT considered as archaeologits by many? Selling artifacts recovered from a shipwreck is NOT a standard practice and usually simply known as treasure hunting, not academically based.

Considering UNESCO is working to ban the trade on artifacts recovered from maritime archaeological/underwater cultural heritage sites, I see this as a huge problem for SEIKO to put this product forward.

I am not sure why they came up with this idea… certainly lost all respects from divers who cares about underwater cultural heritage, history, and archaeology.
