The GMT+9 Auction Watchlist #12

Silver Wave Seiko Diver

What better way to start up the weekend than with a GMT+9 auction watchlist! Items in this list cover early September to mid October. The 50M Silver Wave pictured above is most likely as good an example of this watch as you’ll ever see. In my opinion it was a steal at its 34,000 yen price.

How about the hands on this Orient Fineness model. The Fineness was a higher end Orient Model from the 1960’s. You don’t see them very often. This one sold for 19,000 yen.

This nice 6138-8010 Speedtimer sold for 28,600 yen.

Seiko 6138

The dial and caseback on this Citizen HiSonic is beautiful. I think we’ve recently seen this one somewhere haven’t we? Price was 29,500 yen.

I’ve seen some slightly oblong cases on old King Seiko’s, but never this version which contained a 56xx movement. 22,500 was the winning bid on this one.

I always enjoy seeing the old watches in their original packing. Here’s a cool 6139 packaged in a way I’d never seen before. Bidding was high for this unusual set. 49,000 yen.

Seiko 5 with box

Both Seiko and Citizen had some watches in the 1970’s that were coated with a plastic like material. Here’s an example presented as a LM special. It sold for 18,500 yen.

LM Special Black Coated Case

I had one of these a few years ago. Wonderfully cool watch and deceptively large. This example looked quite nice and sold for 26,000 yen. A reasonable price for a scarce early old Japanese diver.

Citizen Vintage Diver

One of the cool things about the Seiko “Think the Earth” models is the packaging. Although not complete, this picture hints at how the watch is presented. Selling price was 45,500 yen.

There are some high quality styling cues in this Seiko 5T52 World Timer; namely the bracelet and the bezel. I like the “Business Timing” notation on the tag. It sounds so authoritative and professional! The watch sold for 23,000 yen.

Seiko 5T52

This Seiko Type II quartz intrigued me. The hands are so un-Seiko like, and the ridges on the case were strange as well. I couldn’t quite make out what this one was through the translation, but it was a neat watch for sure. Price was 24,800 yen.

Moving on to eBay we have a Citizen Homer railroad watch. These were actually issued pieces. Price on this one was $152.50.

Citizen Railroad Watch

$284.51 for a nice 7016.

Seiko 7016

This is probably the 3rd or 4th 7005 diver I’ve seen modified to look as though it was a Middle Eastern issued military watch. I have no idea if it is legit or not. It was bidded up to $272.44.

Iranian Seiko

eBay is strange. While this Casio Snakekiller Frogman sold for $689.00 another one went untouched with a $490.00 opening bid.

I tried to bid for this 8F35 Seiko Diver, but after the auction was outed on another forum, I was outbid by another person who wouldn’t have seen it had it not been revealed. So much for long hard work paying off right? Ending price was $231.28.

Seiko 8F35 Perpetual Diver

I can’t say for certain whether or not this old Seiko clock was used on a Japanese submarine or not, but that’s how it was advertised. 283.99 was the final price.

That’s if for this installment. Thanks to martback, ptolemy and Bryan for helping out.

Great! That is a beautiful Speedtimer.

Thanks a lot, Petew. The investment
picture is awfully grim, and your
    article is really appreciated!

Too bad Seiko does not make the 8F35 Quartz
diver you pictured. I certainly would
have wanted to buy that beauty.

I thought about purchasing the 8F35 when it was listed the first time around as a Buy It Now. For some reason the seller pulled that auction and relisted it without the Buy It Now option (IIRC). The only thing holding me back was that Paypal was not a payment option and I was also concerned about the watch possibly being too large. In the end it looks like someone took advantage of a nice deal on a nice watch.

    Hi Pete,

great post as always. I can tell you that the Citizen diver is a fantastic watch (as I bought it). Looks even better in real life than in the pictures. A 1968 watch in completely originial condition with even a slight bit of lume left. I was outbid on the watch about a day before closing but for some reason the highest bid got cancelled so I woke up one morning having bought a watch without knowing it.

    Hi Petew,

I think a start bid of $490 is an interesting price for a Snake Killer.I always wonder why prices often drift so much, though $689 sounds very high for this one. You can almost have a real black for that price I think.

The white Seiko diver, Is it a Monster? It looks very nice. I like off-white dials. I always have dubious thoughts about exposing auctions. One the one hand, it can lead you to very rare and beautiful pieces. I remember I got my Giez Millenium this way. On the other hand, you drive up the price if more people are interested in it.

    Kind regards,

    Sjors

  6. ptolemy Says:

Only thing i can add is, Peter, that you are the only person i send links to, prior to bidding:)

Kinda sucks to leak auction like that, but that is a rare dial model and probably is a good buy at the price. I am guessing it will need a battery change right about now:)

I have one of those Seiko Type II quartz’s, (sadly it’s very bashed.) Interesting to see what sort of strap it used to have! 4 jewel movement, battery #394.
