Seiko Phoenix Chronograph Model SAGH005 With Caliber 6S28 Movement

sagh005_1.jpg

My colleague Petew recently broke the news on GMT+9 of the resurrection of the Seiko Phoenix. Today I noticed Seiya Kobayashi in Tokyo unveiled one of the brand new Phoenix models on his Web site SeiyaJapan.com.

I immediately contacted Seiya-san and asked if he’d let me share photos of the watch, and he graciously agreed. So presented here, courtesy of a SeiyaJapan x GMT+9 collaboration, are high-resolution pictures. Seiya-san, who took the pictures, sent them sans the SeiyaJapan.com watermark so you can download them for your watch photo collections.

  • Note the new “Phoenix logo” on the caseback seal, and… Enjoy!

I like this design, and I like the fact that Seiko has lowered the price of admission for a 6S based watch. The smaller continuous seconds subdial is very unobtrusive and at first glance makes you think you are looking at a classic up & down 2 register chronograph.

This is an interesting alternative to something like an Omega Speedmaster.

Now if we could only do something about the current value of the US dollar! :-)

Thanks to Bryan and Seiya-san for sharing these photographs.

    Hi Petew,

I agree about the seconds subdial — it looks like at an angle it will almost “disappear,” and then it reminds you of a classic up and down chronograph. Frankly, I’d like to own this Seiko more than a Moon watch. Although others have said it’s not their cup of tea, it’s a refreshing Seiko design to me.

A nice looking watch, but… The date window bothers me (like they always do) and I’m left feeling that the dial would look so much cleaner and classic if the word ‘Automatic’ and that date window were gone and the word ‘Seiko’ was centered appropriately across from the 3 rather than scrunched up next to the hands.

    I know, everybody’s a watch designer. :)

    Cheers, Greg

    Hi Greg,

Hum … I think I agree with both your points. It would look better without a date window at all, the the text does look like someone hit the “tab” key by accident. That said, I still think it’s cool… I liked your point in Pete’s post about the new Grand Seiko diver having a “cathedral hour hand,” btw. Learned something new there. Nice.

    Thanks for your insights. Appreciated.

    Regards,

    Bryan
