New Mercury-Free Seiko Watch Batteries

The buzz around the water cooler Monday at offices in America was a national story that tap water in the US is more contaminated than many realized. Last weekend I heard Bobby Kennedy Jr. on the radio say monitoring at the mouth of the Columbia River, monitoring that has been reduced in the past decade, shows substantial levels of pollution. Kennedy also said high levels of mercury, including mercury in pollution found in the air, and water, is suspected of causing the increase of autism in children.

So it was a good thing when I learned tonight that Seiko has developed new mercury-free batteries (see below). The bonus is Seiko claims their new batteries perform better than ones they replace.

    Hi Brian,

With the recent developments in battery performance (for laptops and photo equipment performance) I hope this is the beginning in of improved and enviroment friendly button cells. If you see that the performence of the simple rechargable penlight battery has improved from 1300 mAh to 2700 mAh in 5 years, I think this improvement in technology must be applied to button cells too.

    Cheers,

    Hi Sjors,

As a scientist, you must think about these issues daily.

A 98-year-old Japanese man named Masanobu Fukuoka in Shizoka, Japan, says our technology is always one step behind the problems it creates. I wonder if that is true? He puts more stock in natural biological systems than in man-made technologies.

I recommend his book “One Straw Revolution,” which you can get online from Australia for free here. It’s a famous book, I’ll bet it’s published in Dutch too.

Thanks for stopping by. It always makes my day when you visit.

    Regards,

    Bryan
