Favorite ’90s Credor Mechanical

Came across some nice photos today of a Seiko Credor Automatic from 1995 I’ve always had a thing for. It’s model SCVL001, and retailed for 250,000 yen when it was available in Japanese stores a little over a decade ago. It featured an unusual 22-jeweled handwinding movement, caliber 6810A, that had a 37-hour power reserve and kept time to +25/-15 seconds per day. Another unusual thing about this Credor was the word “Seiko” at 12 o’clock rather than the subbrand name.

Unlike most Seikos sold in Japan, Credors are only sold by a small group of authorized dealers and are rarely discounted. So, whereas a Grand Seiko will often be sold in a Japanese department store for up to 40 percent off manufacturer’s suggested retail price — if you want a new Credor, you likely have to pay full price. At the time this Credor was new in stores, the full price was a bit too rich for me.

Carlos Perez wrote about the 6810 caliber movement in an article published on TimeZone’s Web site several years ago.

The case was approximately 35mm across, and the watch weighed 26.5 grams.  There was a version with Roman numerals on the dial, model SCVL002. Because this is a watch I’ve always been fond of, and may be unknown to some GMT+9 readers, I thought I’d take this opportunity to document it.
