The GMT+9 Auction Watchlist #5
It’s about time to look at some interesting auctions over the past month. Our feature presentation is this stunning vintage Seiko Quartz with an unusual purple dial. I didn’t bid high enough. This one sold for 24,000 yen ($213 US dollars). Cool watch!
Let’s continue on with the Yahoo! Japan auctions with this Seikosha darkroom timer. These were used to time your prints while they sat in the various chemicals as you were developing pictures. This could be the first Seiko ever made with a luminous dial. It sold for 5,000 yen ($44).

This is the ever elusive 7C Scubapro diver. In my book, these are as cool as it gets. Price was 101,500 yen ($900).

I liked this Cosmotron and check out the extra screw in the back. I presume this is a rate trimmer? Selling price of 15,000 yen ($133).

As you probably noticed from the feature watch, I like to surf vintage quartz models. There are countless interesting varieties out there. This is a nice Grand Quartz which sold for 15,000 yen ($133).

Neat strap on this 6105 eh? 66,000 yen ($586) was the selling price. I’ve seen these straps alone sell for close to $200.00.

It’s fun to look at Albas. There are some real bargains found under that brand name. This diver sold for a meager 3,100 yen ($28)!

2,000 yen ($18) for this Alba. Don’t ask, I have no idea!

This Seiko School Time GT has an exceptionally clean and cool look to it. 18,000 yen ($160) is pretty high for a School Time, but this was a nice watch.

Not much to say about this very early, very nice and very collectible Grand Seiko except that it sold for a very high 571,000 yen ($5,066).

This is an early Seiko Alpinist. Good example too. Price was 30,600 yen ($271). Great watch!

This is a rarely seen 4S15 diver. These came with cream and black dials and don’t show up too often. The price of 58,550 yen ($519) reflects the watches desirability to collectors.

Here are a couple of Casios from Ebay. First is an interesting Shrouded diver. Well; interesting to me at least but not too many others. It was only bid up to $19.99.

In the last installment, I showed a DW 5800 G-Shock that sold for about 300.00. While a bit nicer, this one sold for a greatly increased price. It ended at $720.00.

Hi petew,
great post as usual. I was fighting for the Alpinist but gave up at JPY 30,100. I thought I would supplement with a caseback pic of the same watch as this was an excellent example.

Thanks for the supplemental picture Martback. Yes, that is an extra nice caseback isn’t it? I don’t think you can get a crisper imprint than that. I hope that whoever won that watch appreciates it!

A great roundup as usual pete. You’ve actually got me looking at watches other than Casios with your auction posts.
The DW-5800 went for a good price but I’ve given up trying to predict what any vintage G-Shock will end up selling for. The prices are very unpredictable. I guess it depends on the moment and who’s looking.

Hi kpatt,
Glad you are enjoying the auction lists. I enjoy your Casio website quite a bit so maybe we are even.
One of the reasons I like to do the watch list is to show people that there are many interesting Japanese watches out there. Seiko, Citizen and Casio have released so many watches over the years, and sometimes I’m surprised that so many collectors ignore watches that I think are both interesting, historical and worthy of collecting.
Thanks for reading!

Hello,
It’s difficult in France to find vintage mechanical japanese watches such as Grand Seiko (or others). I think that Japanese watches appeared in Europe just after the “quartz revolution”.
And the Yahoo Japan auctions are almost useless for an European: language barrier + most sellers not willing to send watches outside Japan.
There are a few services offering Japanese to English translation (unfortunately never complete), plus the possibility to have watch delivered in Japan to their address (and then sent to Europe by them). However this adds 15 to 20% on the cost of the watch! Add some extra 25% (for French customs + shipping) and “expensive” Grand Seiko becomes “unaffordable”!
What a pity…
Best Regards,
MikeNovember.

What a wide-ranging line-up! The price for that last CASIO floors me. I am sure I had one or two of those through the years. Oh, had I only set one aside!

Alba Flat Duck mystery resolved. It has a flat edge and markers on the strap so you can use it as a ruler.
