The GMT+9 Auction Watchlist #3

Giugiaro Seiko Diver

Welcome to the latest GMT+9 auction watchlist. In this installment, I’ve got watches from Yahoo! Japan and eBay covering the first 20 days of September. First one is the limited edition Giugiaro SBBM001 pictured above. Chances are, you haven’t seen that one before. Selling price was 26,000 yen. I kind of like it.

Speaking of indecision, how about this Presage pictured below? It’s so odd and ugly that you have to admire it. This one went for 9,500 yen.

Seiko Presage

Moving on, we come across a more conventional and collectible diver. This is the not too often seen 200M Prospex 7-quartz shrouded diver. Price was 39,500 yen.

200M Prospex Diver

This ladies pocketwatch caught my eye. I wish I could tell you something about it. Price was 9,800 yen.

Seiko Ladies Pocketwatch

Here’s a very conservative and classical looking AGS (Automatic Generating System — the forerunner of Seiko Kinetic) dress watch. It sold for 8,000 yen.

Seiko AGS Roman Dial

Did you know that “The Citizen” watches have been in production for quite awhile? This is an almost vintage model from 1995. It sold for a very reasonable 31,800 yen. Neat watch.

The Citizen

How about this cool yellow Silver Wave. Fun watch and good price. 3,500 yen.

Seiko Silver Wave

I put a weak bid in on this one. It’s a beautiful stopwatch, and I was surprised that it didn’t sell for more. The gavel was struck at 16,500 yen. A bargain in my opinion.

Seiko Stopwatch

Moving on to eBay, there was not much interest on this limited edition Citizen chrono. It was bid up to $406.00, but did not meet reserve.

Citizen Bullhead Chronograph

This Citizen chrono did sell for $137.88. I’ve had these before. Very cool watches.

Citizen 8110 Chronograph

I like the 6M-kinetic series Seiko Yachtimers. They are becoming more collectible all the time. Final price on this example was $187.84.

Seiko Yachttimer

I first saw a picture of this H557 maybe 5 or 6 years ago. Since then, I’ve casually looked for one. They are fairly rare. This is the first one I’ve ever seen for sale. This example was pretty beat up, but it still sold for $132.50.

Seiko Shield Chronograph

I shudder to think how high this DW-5500 would have sold for had it had its jacket and strap. Even in this condition, it still sold for $326.00. Any Casio collectors care to speculate on what it would have sold for if it was complete?

Casio DW 5500

I like unusual Seiko 7Axx watches. Although it shows signs of wear, this one understandably was still bid up to $167.50.

Seiko 7A38

Is this the watch that Roger Federer wears? I thought this one was funny. No one liked it enough to bid on it though. Opening price was $19.99.

Casio Tennis Watch

Here’s one more whimsical Casio. I’ve never seen a moonphase watch like this. No bids at $19.99.

Casio Moonphase

I’ve always said that the Casio MD-703 dive watch was a sleeper, and these two examples are good ways to end this installment. It looks like the word is getting out on these chunky Casio divers. The black dialed version sold for a whopping $564.96 and the harder to find white dialed watch sold for $239.80.

Great list Pete. The SBBM001 and especially the SBBM003 have been my favorites since I first saw them in Seiko’s Giugiaro catalogue. Never seen one for sale before. I can’t believe I missed The Citizen auction for two hours. I think the CTQ57-0836 is the nicest The Citizen model yet. The 7A38, tennis counter and Casio moonphase were all really cool as well.

Here are a few additional Yahoo Japan auctions that I found interesting.

    Re-issue Seiko Astron 9F61-0A50
    265,000 yen ($2318)
One of the models from the Historical Collection. 18K case and accurate to 5 sec/year. Retail price was originally 700,000 yen but still received no bids.

    Seiko Astron

    Astron Back

    Seiko TV-watch
    16,500 yen ($144)
Still four years left to watch TV from this thing in Japan.

    TV Watch

    Seiko Lord Matic “Press Toyama”
    8,500 yen ($74)
This one was made for a newspaper company in Toyama, Japan. Quite a bit more unique than most commemorative Seikos.

    LM

    Seiko Lord Matic 5605-5000
    26,500 yen ($232)
Another LM. Very elegant and a nice set of textured hands.

    Seiko LM2

    Case for Seiko 4S15-7020
    4,700 yen ($41)
I was surprised to see this auction end so low until I noticed the case was used. Still not bad price.

    Hi mot_universe,

Thanks for your additions. I missed a couple of yours too. One thing I’ve learned is that no matter how hard I search, there are always watches that slip through. I missed that Astron reissue and the Toyama Lord Matic sounds very interesting.

I’ve now seen two Giugiaro’s for sale this year. Both were the 001 models. I’ve never seen the white dialed 003 for sale ever. Next time I see one, I’ll let you know and then you can write a reivew of it for GMT+9! :-)

    Thanks for reading.

The DW-5500C-1 went for less than I expected. It’s only the third one I’ve seen (the other two each both sold for $500 - more than two years ago) so I thought it would get more action. A friend has told me that he’s seen a 5500 with complete bezel sell for the equivalent of $2700 US on Yahoo Japan. Incidentally, the buyer is the same Asian collector who recently acquired the rare WW-5100C-9 for $1075 off ebay.

The MW-301 moonphase is a favorite of mine. It’s an unusual watch, especially for Casio, and I rather wanted to buy that one because of the gold dial.

The white dial MD-703 is a new one on me - I didn’t see that auction - thanks for posting it. On the other hand…now there’s another one I need to get…

    Hi Casiophile,

I was hoping you’d chime in about that 5500. It’s a one of my favorite watches that I know I’ll probably never own. I was thrilled when the re-issue came out and have one of those, but I don’t think I’ll ever be lucky enough to own the original.

It seems like it’s been a fun time to watch Casios the last month or two. Lots of interesting ones have popped up.

    Thanks for reading.
