Grand Seiko — Ambition and Pride

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The US dollar continued to wilt this week. It hit a seventh straight record low against the euro today, a 31-year low against the Canadian dollar, and it’s weakening against the Japanese yen. That may be good news for multinational corporations, or for Wall Street-types, but for US consumers the dollar buys […]

The GMT+9 Auction Watchlist #3

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Welcome to the latest GMT+9 auction watchlist. In this installment, I’ve got watches from Yahoo! Japan and eBay covering the first 20 days of September. First one is the limited edition Giugiaro SBBM001 pictured above. Chances are, you haven’t seen that one before. Selling price was 26,000 yen. I kind of like it.

Speaking of indecision, […]

Vintage Catalog Pictures Volume 2 — Seiko

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

In light of the fact that I probably have hundreds of pages of vintage Seiko and Citizen catalogs, I suppose that over time I’ll try to get through them all and share some of the more interesting pages. Let’s start today with a Seiko USA Catalog from the early 1970s.
This first picture is interesting because […]

Japanese Watch Brand Architecture

Monday, September 17th, 2007

There’s a lot of stock with the Seiko or Citizen brand on in the Japanese watch herd. Lately I’ve noticed some horological cowpokes confused by the markings on some of the critters on the range. For instance, is Seiko Spirit a sub-brand? If it’s not, what the heck kind of beast is it, anyway? What […]

Dirty Sexy Seiko

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Tastes change with age. I’d always thought of gold watches as gaudy. In bad taste. Self-indulgent. Hedonistic. Either that, or I considered them watches for old people. For retirees. But recently it struck me how fun it would be to wear a gold Grand Seiko as an everyday watch. To wear to the office. To […]

Death in the Afternoon

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Ernest Hemingway wrote, in his bullfighting book Death in the Afternoon, that before he discovered the traditions and art of bullfighting, he found the sport to be “simple, barbarous and cruel.” Rest assured that there will be nothing like that in this lighthearted comparison between two champion bulls.

It was a great year in 2004 for […]

Seiko Advertising — So Easy A Cavemen Could Do It

Monday, September 10th, 2007

In August 2007, Seiko announced a new worldwide advertising campaign implemented in all international markets and in all media, including T.V., print and digital media. The ads feature watches such as the Velatura (above), an all-new series of watches for sailing. They’re built around the word Me, and ask the rhetorical question, […]

For those needing a little pick-me-up, Citizen has re-issued two versions of their Crystal Seven. Available on Web sites in Japan, both are automatics that handwind. Citizen CTV66-0523 is pictured above, and is based on a watch originally released in 1965. It retails for 14,700 Yen (about $130 US dollars).
