Walter Mitty and the Haiku Watch

I have a 300M “Tuna Can” shrouded diver that is one of the best engineered watches that Seiko makes. Like many others in the watch collecting world, I love sturdy watches, built like tanks, with multi-hundred meter dive capabilities.

But where does the desire for such a watch (and “gear” generally) come from? After all, I never even go in the water, let alone thousands of meters down in the murky depths of the Mariana Trench.

The Mariana Trench is the deepest place on Earth
at 10,916 meters (35,813 feet)

Is it born out of our Walter Mitty’ esq fantasies that sell all those Humvees and over the top gizmos? No doubt, I am the “gadget guy” for all my friends. How else am I going to advise them about GPS devices, PDAs, digital cameras, LED flashlights, Leatherman multi-tools and all the rest without first hand experience of my own (only mildly tongue in cheek)? Like everybody else, they want well designed, efficient, and useful machines that stand out from the crowd.

But I’m also a systems engineer in the computer (IT) field, and a large part of my job is finding ways to keep complex systems running, always maintaining availability to the end user. Thinking about those problems all day makes you appreciate gear that works in the real world.

Whatever the case, Seiko’s professional class products are beautiful, purpose driven, and designed to tackle demanding jobs. Spend some time with them and you will appreciate their subtle finishes, materials, and layout. Everything exactly as it should be.

Like a Haiku.
